Sprint-Nextel (NYSE:S) is rolling out location-based services provider TeleNav's GPS Navigator 7.1 across its Android devices, promising subscribers a more personalized approach to local search, traffic and navigation services.
TeleNav GPS Navigator 7.1 boasts My Dashboard, a redesigned homescreen featuring a map of the user's current location with real-time traffic overlay and customizable "Home" and "Work" buttons depicting current drive times based on live traffic. The app also brings smoother, accelerated map rendering and Multi Routes, which recommend as many as three routes to the destination with distance and estimated drive times based on live traffic conditions. Also new: Cockpit View, which zooms in on roads and street names, and Junction View, which simplifies lane changes.
TeleNav GPS Navigator 7.1 additionally heralds the introduction of customizable Android widgets promising to simplify access to location-specific data. Sprint and TeleNav will offer three widgets at launch: A map depicting the user's current location, a one-box search field and navigation with Home and Work commute times. Shortcuts in the navigation and search widgets make it easier to access Places categories and local traffic.
TeleNav GPS Navigator 7.1 launches later this month and is included free with Sprint's Everything Data and Simply Everything plans--optional premium features like lane assist, speed trap, red light camera, speed limit notification and commute reports are available for an additional $4.99 per month, and custom car icons are available via in-app purchase at 99 cents each. The app is available on Sprint smartphones running Android 2.3 and higher as well as tablets running Android 3.0 and higher.
